Julian Barnes won the Somerset Maugham Award and much public acclaim for his first novel Metroland. His work has a considerable following in France; he was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1988, Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1995 and Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2004. As Dan Kavanagh, Julian Barnes has also written four well-received crime novels: Duffy (1980), Fiddle City (1981), Putting the Boot In (1985), Going to the Dogs (1987)

Julian Barnes' novel,The Sense of an Ending, won the Man Booker Prize for 2011 and was shortlisted for the Best Novel in the Costa Awards.

Julian Barnes' latest book, Levels of Life, is part essay, part short story, part memoir and is dedicated to his wife, Pat Kavanagh, who died in 2008.
