Arthur & George, Barnes' recent novel, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and also for the International IMPAC Award. This was Barnes's third Booker nomination: the other nominations were for Flaubert's Parrot and England, England. Julian Barnes won the Somerset Maugham Award and much public acclaim for his first novel Metroland.
