Arthur & George, Barnes' recent novel, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and also for the International IMPAC Award. This was Barnes's third Booker nomination: the other nominations were for Flaubert's Parrot and England, England. Julian Barnes won the Somerset Maugham Award and much public acclaim for his first novel Metroland. His work has a considerable following in France; he was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1988, Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1995 and Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2004. As Dan Kavanagh, Julian Barnes has also written four well-received crime novels: Duffy (1980), Fiddle City (1981), Putting the Boot In (1985), Going to the Dogs (1987)
May 2008: Julian Barnes opens his new book, Nothing to be Frightened of, with the statement "I don’t believe in God, but I miss him". Julian Barnes’ new book is a family memoir and an exchange with his brother, the philosopher Jonathan Barnes. Julian Barnes warns us that this is not an autobiography, but it does give a fascinating insight into the mind of one of our most interesting writers.
